Won’t God Do It: Dr. Doris J. Sims

Dr. Doris J. Sims received a full scholarship to Claremont Graduate University, where she earned her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education/Child Development. She served as an Associate Professor at California State University, Los Angeles, and taught at several institutions, including CSU Northridge and Vanguard University, for more than 40 years.

Dr. Sims founded a preschool and multiple K–12 schools in the Los Angeles area. She also volunteered for ten years as a juvenile hall counselor and parenting instructor for parents of incarcerated youth. As a consultant with The Institute for Black Parenting, she trained foster and adoptive parents and later taught court-mandated parenting classes. She is the author of four children’s books on African American inventors with accompanying teacher guides and has presented nationally and internationally at schools, colleges, churches, and conferences. Dr. Sims continues to consult in education and family relations.

Dr. Sims is a co-author with Dr. Doretha O’Quinn of Teaching Children and Youth the Ways of God.

A single mother who adopted a son, her lifelong passion is educating African American children and strengthening Black families.
