“Mama Moultrie” & Miles Corwin

Miles Corwin, author of "And Still We Rise", spent the 1996-1997 school year with a class of high school seniors in a gifted program at Crenshaw High School in South Los Angeles. He chronicled the life of an elite group of scholars who had exceptional IQs and standardized test scores. He recorded their journeys as they fought their own private battles, while pressing through tragedies and hardships to seek their goal to attend college. One of their teachers was Mrs. Anita Moultrie Turner. This award-winning educator won the hearts of these students and they affectionately called her "Mama Moultrie".

Both Miles Corwin and Mama Moultrie visited Hamilton High School and spoke with Honors seniors who were reading "And Still We Rise". It was an incredible experience and the students were completely engaged in the conversations around personal goals and setbacks, qualities of an achiever, and social/political/economic issues that impact their lives.

Much thanks to their amazing teacher, Mr. Chris Brinkley, who invited Mr. Miles Corwin and Mama Moultrie, to spend time with his scholars!
